Unionville High School wins math competition for 2nd year A Unionville High team grabbed an early lead and never looked back Friday, winning the annual Temple University mathematics Owlympiad for the second year in a row. In addition to promoting mathematics, the competition introduces students to career paths in applied mathematics. Fox's Department of Risk, Insurance and Healthcare Management and the Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma organize the competition. “We’re very popular with parents. Not all high-school students realize that an actuary uses math skills to calculate risk; so we’re eager to get the word out that this a great field," said faculty member Michael McCloskey. International alliance promotes hands-on learning for MBAs The business school at University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has joined forces with Temple's Fox School of Business to develop an integrated consulting practice aimed at giving MBA students more hands-on experience. UTS will build on Fox's expertise in MBA consulting, as Fox students have completed more than 200 projects in the past 10 years through the Enterprise Management Consulting (EMC) Practice. "We are taking what they do over at Temple University so well and adapting it here so we can work together on live case studies and the students can interact together," said UTS Business School Associate Dean Christine Burton. Sydney Morning Herald | May 12, 2012 Want to be happy at work? Try thinking small Everyone tells you to think big —but that’s bad advice when it comes to happiness. Big accomplishments lead to big joys, right? Maybe. But they happen relatively rarely, so you are spending months, maybe years of unhappiness for a quick shot of joy. Instead, think small by celebrating small victories, resisting comparisons, recognizing the good, living for today and being patient. "Think long term," writes human resource management Professor Robert A. Giacalone. "Small things are seeds that often grow into bigger things. Giant trees start as germinating seeds. So, relax. Watch the small things grow." CareerBliss | May 9, 2012
Equality Forum racial panel deals with dueling identities The Equality Forum’s National Racial Panel convened three successful Philadelphians, all members of minority groups, to discuss coming to terms with two identities—being both a cultural and sexual minority—in the United States. Panelist Gregory DeShields, managing director of business development, shared his professional challenges and encouraged the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community to understand "what our economic influence can be, what our spending power is,” noting that LGBT people spend about $63 billion a year on vacations alone.
